The New TV Season

New Shows
Winners
-------
* Threshold - Carla Gugino, Data, Roc, and crew fight alien invasion. The best of the "Aliens are coming to get us" theme that seems to have cropped up this season.
* Everybody Hates Chris - Chris Rock's life as a 13-year-old growing up in NY. Just side-splittingly funny.
* Supernatural - Brothers investigate all those myths (or are they?) you told each other around the campfire when you were kids. Spooky!
* My Name is Earl - Jason Lee discovers Karma (via Carson Daly) and sets out to make right with all those he's wronged.
* Prison Break - Requires a healthy suspension of disbelief, but totally engaging action-drama about a brother who gets himself sent to prison in order to break his wrongfully imprisoned-on-death-row brother out.
* How I Met Your Mother - Don't know how I originally forgot this one. Thanks to Jon and Adam for the reminder. Funny stuff. Neil Patrick Harris is stealing the show, but I loves me some Alyson Hannigan, too.

Losers
------
* E-Ring - People in a office in the Pentagon watch others do their dirty work. Dull.
* Surface - Why do people keep giving Lake Bell jobs?
* Ghost Whisperer - Jennifer Love Hewitt has nice boobs. Otherwise, this show wishes it was Medium.

So-So
-----
* Bones - Started out pretty bad, but has been improving.
* Commander in Chief - Interesting premise, this also has room for improvement.
* Invasion - currently the second-best "Aliens are coming to get us" show. Pilot was a major snooze, but the second episode was much better. Hopefully it'll continue that trend.

Returning Shows
Winners
-------
* Veronica Mars - With Battlestar Galactica on hiatus until January, this is the best show on television. Smart, funny, and unpredictable. Don't miss it.
* House - Hugh Laurie as snarky Dr. Gregory House is great fun to watch.
* Lost - Has managed to pick up right where it left off without missing a beat.
* NCIS - Survived loss of one major castmember. Remains to be seen if it survives addition of two new ones. So far I'm okay with Lauren Holly as the new director, but I'm so-so on the Mossad chick.
* CSI:NY - The newest CSI is now the best CSI. Gary Sinise was a major casting coup, and I could stare at Melina Kanakaredes all damn day.
* Las Vegas - I like the new Montecito. The old one looked like a bastardization of the Bellagio and Venetian. Ugly. Sorry to see Nessa gone; I wish it had been Delinda. I'm liking Lara Flynn Boyle as the new casino owner, though.
* Medium - The show surprised me because I didn't think it looked that great from the previews last season. Glad to be wrong, as this is pretty interesting stuff.
* Desperate Housewives - This is a show I was prepared to hate last year because it kept Alias off the air until January. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the show. It doesn't hurt that all these Housewives are fabulous babes, either. Eva, if you get tired of rich basketball players, call me.

Losers
------
Not sure. I didn't watch them last year, so this year won't be any different.

So-so
-----
* Joey - I like Drea DeMatteo, but otherwise the show isn't really holding my attention.
* Alias - Disappointing start to it's final season. Hopefully it improves with the addition of new cast members to cover for Jen Garner's pregnancy. Hard to say, though, since the show has been about Sydney since the beginning.

The season premiere of "Alias" was underwhelming. I know that people didn't like the last two seasons, but the episodes contained in each were much better than this season premiere.

"NCIS" is one of the mose underrated shows on the air. I am not a huge fan of either of the two additions to the cast, so we'll see how it goes. I do think that the show probably isn't given the credit it deserves.

"Amazing Race: Family Edition" -- TAR is the best reality show on the air right now. I am not sure how the "family" concept will hold up, but the show is always fast-paced and always entertaining.

"Lost" is still the most compelling drama on the air. I'm enjoying this season a lot.

"How I Met Your Mother" -- it might be the funniest of the new comedies. Obviously, it tries to strike the same chord that "Friends" did, and it does a relatively good job of it. It is a likable show with a likable cast.

I watched the first episode of S2 of "Veronica Mars" based on umpteen excellent reviews and the goading of Joel. It is hard to get a complete feel for the show from one ep, but it has that nice Nancy Drew meets "Smallville" vibe (minus the freakazoid creature factor in "Smallville"). Looks like I am going to have to pick up S1 on DVD next week.

It is too bad that UPN put "Veronica Mars" up against "Lost." For that matter, it is annoying to have to decide between "Survivor," "Joey," and "Alias" on Thursdays.

Not a huge fan of any of the new sci-fi themed shows so far. I haven't watched "Threshold" yet, but Carla Gugino is an awesome actress (see "Karen Sisco").

Oh yeah...and "...Earl" is terrific That is because Jason Lee rules. Nice of NBC to re-air it every week on Bravo.

I have been telling all those I convinced to watch Veronica Mars: the season premiere was GOOD, but much slower paced than the episodes normally are. There was so much recapping. The show is going to pick up SO fast. Definitely pick up VM Season 1 on DVD; I will be doing that myself :)

Everybody Hates Chris is my favorite NEW show of the year--hilarious!!! As long as they dont give away ALL the punchlines in the previews (like they did with ep 1) they'll be fine. Love that show. WTG UPN!

Commander in Chief Trying to give this a chance. I love Geena Davis; casting was impeccable here. And JAKE KANE, what are you doing as the president's hubby?! (And you better not get too big for your britches on this fancy schmancy ABC show. ;)

Desperate Housewives: Hellooooo this is such a juicy show. Just so off the wall. And I'd like to balance out your JLH boob comment by saying that James Denton is HOT.

Grey's Anatomy: This show started SO slow last year, but I watched b/c of the DHW lead in. The second half of the season was outstanding and it just keeps getting better. I am not a medical show fan, so this one is more relatable for me.

Dang, "Desperate Housewives" is another one I forgot. I suck at this. Added DH to the Winners column.

Bridge and I watch "Grey's Anatomy" each week.

I must say, in the realm of "medical dramas" that it is really quite compelling -- much in the way that "ER" was six or seven years ago.

I am not a big fan of hospital shows in general, but it is pretty good.

Speaking of "ER" (and "The West Wing"), it might be time for both of those to call it quits. We still watch them, but part of me thinks it is mostly out of habit.

I watched the season premiere of "Joey," but for some reason it just didn't feel like the Joey character that was on "Friends."
